The lofter was a holdover from the early days of iron clubs, when the lofter or lofting iron was the long-bladed club of choice for sand, deep grass or elevated shots. Lofters of this era could have been made as a substitute for a spade mashie. Because of the spade mashie’s unwieldiness, this club would have offered a great alternative.
