Harry Vardon is believed to have played a mongrel iron during the 1913 US Open at Brookline .

This club was probably intended as an option to a driving iron or a driving mashie. With its musselback design andd low center of gravity, the mongrel iron is capable of very powerful, high trajectory shots. Only a few examples are known.
